About
Breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery performed to enhance the breasts. We offer breast augmentation with implants and breast augmentation with fat transfer.
During a breast augmentation with implants, breast implants are placed in the tissues of the chest. Breast implants are prosthetic devices that can either be filled with saline (sterile salt water) or made of silicone gel.
Each type of breast implant offers its own benefits. Saline implants can be inserted empty and then filled, which allows for smaller, more discreet incisions. If a rupture or leak occurs, saline is harmlessly absorbed by the tissues.
Silicone implants are quite popular and tend to have a more natural feel than saline implants. Because they come pre-filled, their size cannot be changed during surgery.
Aside from coming in different types, breast implants are available in various textures (rough or smooth), shapes (round or teardrop), and profiles (from low to ultra-high). They are also available in a wide range of sizes based on the patient’s frame and cosmetic goals.
Options
Innovative augmentation techniques can be performed to increase the size of the breasts. Aside from traditional breast implants, we provide fat transfer breast augmentation, combining body contouring and breast enhancement.
Fat transfer utilizes fat deposits from other parts of the body. With the help of liposuction, fat is harvested from areas like the thighs, back, and belly. After being processed, the fat is injected into the breasts. Fat transfer breast augmentation is less invasive and offers incredibly natural results. Note that it is best performed on patients who do not want a significant increase in breast size.
Breast augmentation may also be combined with a breast lift procedure to achieve optimal breast aesthetics. This combination is known as augmentation mastopexy. By placing implants and removing excess skin, a breast augmentation with lift can reduce sagging while enhancing the breasts’ size, shape, and perkiness.
Ideal Candidate
Women who want to increase the size of their breasts by one or more cup sizes are ideal for breast augmentation. Those looking to restore the fullness of their breasts after pregnancy or nursing are also excellent candidates. Patients must be in good overall health with no underlying serious illnesses that could hinder their healing. Smokers must quit six weeks before surgery to prevent complications and avoid a prolonged recovery.
Consultation
Your breast augmentation consultation will involve an in-depth conversation with one of our renowned and board-certified plastic surgeons: Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, FACS; Jason M. Weissler, MD; Stephanie A. Cooper, MD. During this initial appointment, you will be asked to talk about your cosmetic goals and expected outcome and will be invited to ask any questions you may have.
Your surgeon will also perform a physical examination of your breasts and body during your consultation. Photographs may be taken as a reference. He or she will also thoroughly review your medical history to assess any risk factors, including underlying illnesses, allergies, and current medications.
Options for implant shape, size, type, texture, and profile will all be discussed to determine the best breast implants for you. Your surgeon will create a plan tailored to your goals, and then a date will be set for your breast augmentation procedure.
Procedure
Breast augmentation surgery can take a few hours to complete and will be performed under general anesthesia. After the anesthesia has taken effect, an incision will be created. The incision may be made under the crease of the breast (the inframammary incision), along the edge of the areola (the periareolar incision), or in the armpit (the transaxillary incision).
Next, a pocket will be created under the glandular breast tissue or in front of the pectoral muscle. The implant will be placed into this pocket. Once the implant is properly positioned, the incision will be closed. After the other implant has been placed symmetrically, the chest will be bandaged.
Recovery

Your recovery period after breast augmentation can take several days to a few weeks. Swelling, bruising, and pain are to be expected following your procedure. Pain medications will be prescribed to alleviate the discomfort, as well as antibiotics to reduce the chance of infection.
A surgical bra must be worn during the first week to minimize swelling. Making sure to wear bras without underwire is key, since underwire can damage the tissues while they are still healing.
You will not be able to get back to your daily routine right away. However, you are encouraged to perform light movements to facilitate good blood flow.
It will be necessary to take time off from work during breast augmentation recovery. You may need six to eight weeks before you are able to lift weights, play sports, or take part in other physically strenuous activities.
Recovery Expectations
Breast implant surgery is a safe and effective surgical cosmetic procedure that can boost your confidence and dramatically enhance your figure. Dr. Greenberg will personally meet with you to outline your entire procedure and the steps to follow for a successful recovery.
During your initial consultation with Dr. Greenberg, he will spend time discussing all the options available to you in breast augmentation in order to customize your treatment to fit your personal needs.
After surgery, Dr. Greenberg will examine the surgical site and carefully place your compression garment. This garment will allow for a quicker recovery time by minimizing pain, bruising, and inflammation. Once released from our office, you will need someone to drive you home and stay with you for the first 48 hours. Your breasts may feel sore and swollen the first few days after surgery. You can expect a full recovery if you follow your post-operative care instructions carefully. You should also be sure to:
- Get enough rest and avoid any activities that could strain the pectoral muscles or surgical site
- Attend all post-operative appointments
- Take pain medication as prescribed to minimize discomfort
- Apply ice packs to your breasts in 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling
- Wear your compression garment as directed
- Limit sodium intake to minimize swelling
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Walk daily to prevent blood clots
- Avoid showering for two to three days, or until cleared by the doctor
- Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least two weeks after surgery
- Avoid tight-fitting clothing around breasts
- Avoid driving until cleared by the doctor
Recovery Timeline and Results
While each patient is different, breast implant recovery typically takes about six months. Below is a brief timeline of what you can expect.
Week 1
Follow your post-op instructions to reduce inflammation and bruising. Return for your first follow-up appointment so Dr. Greenberg can monitor your progress and remove any sutures and drains. In most cases, patients can return to work by the end of the first week.
Week 2-3
Continue to ice and take your medication. However, you may discontinue wearing your compression garment. You should only experience mild soreness and swelling at this point. You can expect to begin gentle daily activities such as walking; however, you should continue avoiding strenuous activity.
Week 4-6
You should no longer experience any swelling at this point, and you will begin to notice your results becoming more apparent. If your recovery is progressing, Dr. Greenberg will allow you to return to more physically demanding activities.
Months 3-4
As your breast implants have settled, you will see a noticeable difference in their shape and size, revealing natural-looking results. At this point, your scars will also begin to fade.
Months 6-12
You should be completely healed and enjoying your final results. It is important that you continue to see Dr. Greenberg for your follow-up appointments, as well as undergo regular exams and mammograms to monitor the health of your breasts.
