What Is Lip Augmentation?
Lip augmentation procedures can alter the size and shape of the lips to achieve a patient’s cosmetic goals. Augmenting the lips can positively impact facial harmony and balance, making this procedure quite popular.
Patients who seek lip augmentation treatments may have lips that are thinner than they’d like because of genetics. For others, the lips have lost volume or developed fine lines from the aging process, long-term sun damage, or muscular stress. In other cases, lip augmentation is performed to improve the symmetry of the lips and/or bring them into more aesthetic proportion with the rest of their facial features.
At Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology, we offer three different techniques for lip augmentation. One is through dermal filler injections, using either Juvéderm® or Restylane®. Both formulas contain hyaluronic acid (HA) as a primary ingredient. HA fillers add volume by helping the lips retain moisture, so they look full and youthful.
The other two methods are fat grafting, or fat transfer, and implants. For fat transfer, we use liposuction to remove unwanted body fat from another area of your body. We then purify the extracted fat, so it can be injected into the lips to increase volume. We can also augment the lips by surgically placing silicone lip implants.
Which Type of Lip Augmentation is Right for You?
The type of lip augmentation we recommend for you will depend on:
- Your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals
- Your treatment preferences
- Your allergies and medical history
Dermal fillers are the most conservative lip augmentation option as HA filler treatments are temporary and can even be reversed. Lip filler treatments are performed in-office and do not require anesthesia or downtime. With periodic follow-up treatments, you can maintain your results long-term, and you also have the option to refine your look at each injection session.
Fat transfer is a minimally invasive lip augmentation option that provides longer-lasting results than dermal fillers. This procedure can be an excellent choice for patients whose cosmetic goals include fat reduction in another area of the body, such as the back, flanks, upper arms, or thighs, in addition to lip augmentation. Since fat grafting to the lips adds volume by using fat from your own body, there is no risk of allergic reaction.
With lip implants, patients can achieve permanent improvements and the most dramatic augmentation results. Lip implants are surgically placed, so this procedure involves the use of anesthesia, small incisions, and a considerable recovery period compared to dermal fillers.
Consultation
The first step of any lip augmentation procedure is to come in for an initial consultation with one of our exceptionally qualified plastic surgeons: Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, FACS; Jason M. Weissler, MD; Stephanie A. Cooper, MD.
At this appointment, your medical history will be reviewed to ensure you are in good overall health. Your lips and facial contours will be examined as well. From there, we can determine which strategy is best for you and what your individual results might look like for each method.
Preparation
You will be given specific instructions to prepare for your procedure, such as avoiding blood thinners and anti-inflammatories starting 7 to 10 days prior. You may be asked to stop smoking one month before and abstain until at least one month after your session or surgery date. On the day of your procedure, make sure your face is clean and do not apply any makeup or other cosmetic products.
Expectations
The treatment process differs from one type of lip augmentation to another. We will be sure to explain your specific procedure and answer any questions you have prior to your scheduled treatment.
- Dermal fillers – Dermal filler treatments can be performed in as little as 30 minutes and involve the injection of Restylane® or Juvéderm®, as needed, to accomplish your desired outcome.
- Fat transfer – First, you will be given medications to keep you comfortable during the fat removal and fat injection processes. Liposuction will be performed to harvest fat cells from a particular area of the body while also creating slimmer contours at the targeted site, as prearranged during your consultation. The fat cells then undergo extensive purification. Once purified, fat can be injected into the lips.
- Lip implants – This procedure involves either local anesthesia or conscious sedation. Small incisions will then be made, so a clamp can be inserted to create a tunnel within the lip tissue. The implant is then placed and positioned, and the clamp is removed.
Post Procedure
Your recovery experience after lip augmentation will depend on the type of procedure performed, and we will provide detailed aftercare instructions to guide you through the process. Lip fillers are considered a no-downtime treatment, while fat grafting to the lips and lip implants will require that you take some time off work to rest and heal.
Cost
Every lip augmentation treatment is different, so an exact overall cost cannot be determined until we map out your individualized treatment plan. Factors impacting the price of lip augmentation include the type of procedure performed and specific techniques utilized, and applicable anesthesia and facility fees.
