What is Chin Augmentation?
Genioplasty or chin augmentation is a surgical procedure to reshape or increase the size of the chin for better projection and appearance. It can balance the profile by extending the chin in relation to the nose.
After examining you and taking your medical history to begin your genioplasty Long Island or New York City consultation, Dr. Greenberg will discuss the variables that influence the decisions involved in the chin augmentation procedure, such as the length, width, and symmetry of the chin, as well as the degree of projection desired and the expected cost.
Dr. Greenberg will individualize the specific chin augmentation procedure to your desires and your exact chin deficiencies. Aesthetic genioplasty typically is performed to add size and contour to a receding chin; the extent of the procedure depends on what changes are desired and what Dr. Greenberg can accomplish with your specific anatomy.
During The Procedure
Dr. Greenberg performs chin augmentation in his office ambulatory surgery centers both on Long Island and in Manhattan. Genioplasty usually is performed under local anesthesia (which numbs the area around the chin) or under a light general anesthetic.
There are two primary methods that Dr. Greenberg can use to enhance your chin (genioplasty), these include:
- Chin implants: Chin augmentation can be performed using a chin implant. Dr. Greenberg can insert the silicone implant through a hidden incision in your mouth or a small incision under the chin.
- Chin bone repositioning: Dr. Greenberg may suggest repositioning your chin bone. For this procedure, he will move your lower jaw forward, through an incision created inside your mouth. This type of surgery requires a longer recovery but can be a good option if you have a severely sloping chin or a congenital defect.
After your chin augmentation surgery, Dr. Greenberg will apply a protective dressing to cover the chin area. You will be swollen and may experience slight discomfort and/or numbness in the area for up to two months. Medication may be prescribed to make you more comfortable.
Most patients can return to work within seven days after the chin augmentation surgery and can resume most normal activities in about two weeks. Patients can start exercising a month after the surgery.
Factors such as the surgical techniques used will impact the cost of your chin augmentation cost. Our team can go over the expected price of your chin augmentation, as well as financing options, during your consultation with Dr. Greenberg.
