Cosmetic procedures that focus on the accentuation of our physical aesthetics have changed in recent years. For patients looking for certain procedures, it’s not always easy to determine what kind of doctor to look for, as both cosmetic surgeons in NY and board certified plastic surgeons in NY, offer specialized services for the variety of treatments that are available. While cosmetic surgery is considered a type of plastic surgery, cosmetic surgeons in NY are only licensed to conduct cosmetic procedures. Typically speaking, those who work as dermatologists or oral surgeons call themselves “cosmetic surgeons”.
Plastic surgeons go through extensive training and are board certified by the American Board Of Plastic Surgery, acquiring much experience to ensure that patients achieve optimal results. Here at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery, we ensure that our patients are on the same page as us, when it comes to the terminology and assessing which providers they should be coordinating with, based on the procedures that they’re seeking.
Types Of Surgeons & The Procedures They Conduct
For our current and prospective patients who are still unsure of the differences, fear not, as you’re not alone. A 2017 report conducted in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery indicated that people were confused by the terms “plastic” and “cosmetic”. Our team of cosmetic surgeons in NY and board certified plastic surgeons in NY at Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery will help you learn about the differences and similarities, guiding you in the right direction for achieving the results of your dreams.
With that in mind, it’s important to understand the distinction between cosmetic and plastic surgery:
- Reconstructive Surgery (Plastic Surgery): These kinds of procedures will treat parts of the body that have been impacted by tumors, infections, disease, trauma, and much more. Examples include cleft lip and palate restoration, skin cancer removal, scar revision, hand surgery, and breast reconstruction.
- Cosmetic Plastic Surgery: Enhances or restructures parts of the body. Examples include facelifts, breast lifts and augmentations, liposuction, skin resurfacing, and spider vein removal.
Both cosmetic and plastic surgeries can involve surgical, nonsurgical, or minimally invasive procedures. However, cosmetic surgeons do not endure the same methods of training as board certified plastic surgeons. As previously mentioned, board certified plastic surgeons receive their credentials from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The certification is not just an arbitrary choice.
Board surgeons will go through 6-8 years of specialized training through an accredited plastic surgery training program within the US, that is regulated by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Dr. Greenberg received his college and medical degrees with high honors from George Washington University, he then went on to complete his surgical training at The New York Hospital-Cornell University Medical Center. He did more training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Greenberg has board certification from The American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board Of Surgery
The other society that certifies plastic surgeons is The American Society Of Plastic Surgeon (ASPS). For cosmetic surgeons, The American Board Of Cosmetic Surgery (ABCS) will certify those eligible for cosmetic surgery credentials. Cosmetic surgeons will complete 4 years of medical school, followed by 4-6 years of residency, a 1-2 years training program, and lastly, passing the certification exam.
