What Is a Facelift?
A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical operation used to reorient or remove skin and/or muscle in the midface and lower face to improve your appearance and mitigate the aging process. A rhytidectomy can address any or all of the following concerns:
- Drooping, sagging, or loose facial skin
- Deep nasolabial folds
- Jowls
Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?
Good candidates for a rhytidectomy are generally people in their 40s to 60s who show signs of aging but also retain some elasticity in their skin. If you’re a healthy non-smoker who is able to heal well, you may be a good candidate for a facelift.
Candidates must also be realistic about the potential outcome of this surgery. Although facelifts can rejuvenate your look, they cannot completely reverse the aging process and are not intended to treat sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines, or irregular skin texture.
To confirm your candidacy, you’ll first have a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons: Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, FACS; Jason M. Weissler, MD; Stephanie A. Cooper, MD; or Christopher L. Johnson, MD, MSc, FACS.

How to Prepare for a Facelift
Following your surgeon’s pre-op instructions is key to ensuring a successful procedure and recovery. Before you have a facelift, you will need to prepare for surgery by taking the following steps:
- Visit your doctor for a consultation and medical evaluation.
- Provide our surgeon with complete information regarding any medications and supplements you are taking.
- Quit smoking several weeks before your facelift.
- Stop taking aspirin and any anti-inflammatory medicines 7-10 days prior.
You will need to coordinate with someone to drive you to and from the surgical facility. You should also arrange for someone to stay with you for at least 48 hours after surgery to assist you around your home. Depending on the nature of their profession, people who elect to have a facelift may need to take a week or two weeks off from work.

What Does a Facelift Procedure Involve?
Facelifts involve the administration of anesthesia. Intravenous (IV) sedation or general anesthesia will be recommended by our surgeon based on your needs.
The size and placement of the incisions associated with a rhytidectomy will depend on the kind of facelift performed. Our surgeons take extreme care to make facelift incisions as discreet as possible.
After the incisions have been made, our surgeon will reposition and/or remove skin and tighten facial muscles. When all modifications have been completed, your incisions will be closed with sutures. These sutures will eventually dissolve or be removed as you heal.
What to Expect During Facelift Recovery
Immediately following your procedure, you will be taken to a recovery room and monitored while the effects of the anesthesia wear off. Your face will be bandaged and may be fitted with drainage tubes to reduce bruising and swelling.
Once your condition is stable, your surgeon will see you, review your aftercare instructions, arrange a follow-up appointment, and then release you from the hospital. You may also receive prescriptions to combat pain or infection.
Facelifts cause swelling and bruising that can persist for a few weeks. We recommend staying indoors and avoiding the sun as best you can during this time. It is essential that you adhere to all provided directions regarding caring for your incision sites and restricting your physical activity. Doing so will promote efficient healing and maximum aesthetic improvements.
As you recover, your surgeon will need to assess your progress. Your first follow-up appointment may take place a few days after surgery.
When Will You Notice Results?
It can take a few months to fully recover from a rhytidectomy and see the final outcome of the procedure. Our facelift patients can anticipate more lifted, youthful facial contours that last for several years as a result of undergoing this procedure. With proper aftercare, your post-op marks will fade considerably over the first year or two after your facelift.
How Much Does a Facelift Cost?
The price of facelift surgery varies based on the type of procedure you have. The surgical techniques required, anesthesia and facility fees, and whether you combine your facelift with a complementary facial plastic surgery will affect the overall cost.

“I am a 60 yr old experienced RN and had a facelift with Dr Greenberg March 2017 with excellent results. I had very little pain, swelling, and bruising. I took 2 weeks off from work but I could have gone back sooner. The results are very natural but he managed to get rid of the stuff on my face/neck that bothered me. It seems that my face/neck look the way it used to when I was younger.”
“Okay so I’m 11 hours post lower-mid/ face and neck lift and I have to say I’m sitting here.. online shopping and writing this review. My experience was awesome from beginning to now. I chose Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery because I’ve worked in the industry for almost 25 years and had seen so very many of his patients with great results. Dr. Greenberg and his staff explained every detail and answered all of my questions throughly (I had many, and some were definitely silly) but he took the time to walk me through every step and addressed every concern. So far my experience has been exactly as I was explained to me. I can’t begin to say how patient, caring and wonderful Dr. Greenberg and his staff have been and I’m so excited to see what I’m sure will been an incredible result!”

Rhinoplasty
Dr. Greenberg performs this procedure on many teens and adults every week. Rhinoplasty can now be performed to look natural, without the “operated on” appearance to the nose.
Facelift
Face lifts are performed on patients as they age to restore a youthful look. In general, a face lift will lift your sagging cheeks, help to eliminate jowls, and remove the redundant skin and fat from the neck.
Forehead Lift
A forehead lift will remove or reduce horizontal creases across the forehead, furrows between the eyebrows and sagging eyebrows. Due to the aging process, genetics, stress or muscle activity, facial muscles and tissues can loose elasticity causing wrinkles and furrowed lines.
