The Breast Lift Procedure
Breast lift surgery, or mastopexy, is a procedure designed to raise and re-shape the breasts for a more youthful appearance. During breast lift surgery, incisions will be made around the areola, possibly extending down the breast and along the inframammary crease so that excess breast tissue can be removed. The areola and nipple are repositioned, the skin envelope is tightened, and the incisions are closed. The incisions are closed with sutures and may also be supported with surgical tape or skin adhesives.

In general, the first few days following surgery are often the most painful, however, most surgeons will prescribe pain medication to ease pain and discomfort. To help ensure proper healing and avoid complications, strenuous exercise and heavy lifting should be avoided for at least four to six weeks. You will also be taught how to care for your incisions to avoid infection or other complications. Pain and swelling are to be expected for the first few days following surgery but if pain and swelling become worse, this may be a sign of infection and should be brought to your physician’s attention immediately. Following all of your surgeon’s post-operative instructions is vital to having a successful breast lift recovery. It is also beneficial to have a friend or family member around during the first few days following surgery, especially for patients who are new mom’s or mothers of young children, since it may be difficult to move around and bending down should be avoided.

As with all surgery, the breast lift procedure carries some risks. The risk of complication is relatively low for breast lift surgery, however, patients should be aware of these risks regardless. The possible risks of breast lift surgery include:

- Infection
- Scarring
