Update Your Look Breast Implant Exchange in Long Island
Breast implants, while long-lasting medical devices, are not designed to last a lifetime. For most breast augmentation patients, there comes a time when they will need to replace their breast implants. The procedure for removing old implants and replacing them with new ones is breast implant exchange, and it gives patients a chance to upgrade and update their implants and aesthetics.

What Is Breast Implant Exchange?
Breast implant exchange is a cosmetic procedure ideal for patients who have breast implants from a prior breast augmentation, and for a variety of reasons, wish to remove their old implants and replace them with new ones. As opposed to breast implant revision, which usually involves removing old implants but may include an additional procedure like a breast lift, breast implant exchange surgery is best for patients who are generally happy with their breast augmentation, but they just find it’s time for a change.
What Are the Benefits of Breast Implant Exchange Surgery?
Breast implant exchange gives patients the freedom to update their implants and enhance their overall aesthetic to better reflect their current identity. It may seem simple, but breast augmentation and the type of implants that are used have huge impacts on a woman’s overall frame and aesthetic. What was once a look you loved in your twenties may no longer resonate with the person you are today. Breast implant exchange surgery provides the following benefits:
- An updated aesthetic
- Upgrades old implants
- Replacing implants reduces the risk of rupture
- Modify the shape, size, and material of the implants
- Your surgeon can potentially use the same incisions to minimize new scars
Who Is an Ideal Candidate for Breast Implant Exchange?
Candidates for breast implant exchange have undergone a primary breast augmentation and want to remove and replace their old implants with new ones. Sometimes, patients are ready to downsize large implants, or they want to exchange saline implants for silicone (or vice versa). Other patients have had their implants for 10 years or more, and would like new implants to reduce the risk of rupture or other complications. Additionally, ideal candidates for breast implant exchange:
- Want to replace old implants for aesthetic, personal, or physical reasons
- Are in good health
- Are nonsmokers or are willing to quit
- Have reasonable expectations for results
The best way to determine if you are a candidate for breast implant exchange surgery is to schedule a consultation with one of our breast enhancement experts. One of our board-certified plastic surgeons will meet with you to determine your goals and reasons for desiring surgery before suggesting a surgical plan that will best support you. Call Greenberg Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology today at (888) 680-2090 or complete the contact form to get started.

How Is Breast Implant Exchange Performed?
Preparing for Your Breast Implant Exchange
Preparing for your breast implant exchange procedure is similar to that of an initial breast augmentation. The first step to your breast implant exchange is your comprehensive consultation with one of our experienced surgeons. They will listen to your goals and ideas for the procedure, as well as learn about your previous surgical experience and your satisfaction with your current breast implants. As breast implants are so customizable, they will help you choose the best shape, projection, size, and material that will yield results you’ll love. They will also discuss incision locations, the surgical steps, recovery, and potential results.
It’s best to plan ahead by purchasing everything you’ll need for your recovery period: plan meals, get prescriptions ready, and find someone to assist you for the first few days of recovery. These steps will set you up for a comfortable and successful recovery period.
What to Expect During Your Breast Implant Exchange
The details of your breast implant exchange procedure depend on your goals and the decisions you and your surgeon made. For example, if you originally had an inframammary incision, your surgeon will likely use the same kind so that you do not have a secondary scar. However, generally, you can expect the following for your breast implant exchange surgical steps:
- Breast implant exchange is performed as an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia for your comfort.
- Your surgeon will begin by making incisions in the appropriate area: inframammary, periareolar, or transaxillary. This will be predetermined by you and your surgeon during your initial consultation.
- Through the incisions, they will remove your old implants (with or without the breast capsule, depending on your needs and its condition).
- Next, your new implants will be placed in the breast pocket.
- Once your surgeon is satisfied with the results, they will carefully close the incisions with neat sutures.
After your procedure, you will be monitored as you wake up from the anesthesia. Depending on your needs, you may be kept for observation in our luxurious recovery center. Once your surgeon clears you to do so, you will be sent home with your responsible driver.
Breast Implant Exchange Recovery & Aftercare
In most cases, your breast implant exchange recovery will be quite similar to that of your primary breast augmentation. Expect some soreness and tightness, especially if you have chosen larger breast implants than before. While each patient is different, you should plan to take at least one week off from work to recover.
You will likely need to wear a special surgical bra per your surgeon’s instructions. Additionally, it’s important to avoid bending, lifting, or participating in strenuous activities for at least four to six weeks—or until your surgeon clears you to do so. Our team will provide you with specific aftercare and recovery instructions for your procedure.
What Results Can I Expect From Breast Implant Exchange Surgery?
After your breast implant exchange procedure, you can enjoy your customized and upgraded look. Depending on the changes made, your breasts will be more aligned with the aesthetic you desire: more dramatically augmented with plump cleavage, or more subtle and easy to “dress down” for work. Some may choose a round shape that provides more volume at the upper breast pole, while others opt for a teardrop, a more natural implant shape. The choice is yours.
Breast Implant Exchange FAQs
There are many choices to make when it comes to designing your ideal breast augmentation appearance. You can choose between saline, silicone, and gummy bear implant materials, different projections of the implants, and the implant shape. Implant size and placement also affect the overall look and feel of your result. Take a look at our comprehensive breast implant guide to begin thinking about your choice for upgrading your implants. Our experienced plastic surgeons are here to help you make the final decision during your consultation.
The two procedures have some similarities in that they each begin by removing old breast implants. However, breast revision is often more complex with more surgical steps, because it is indicated for patients who have experienced issues with their breast implants, like capsular contracture, and may require a more technically advanced surgical approach.
Additionally, breast revision patients may choose another procedure to improve the integrity of their breasts, like a breast lift, if their breast skin is loose and sagging. Breast revision may alternatively include the removal of implants and a natural breast augmentation with fat grafting instead of implants.
Breast implant exchange is a little more straightforward: you want to remove old implants and replace them with an updated set.
If you want to remove your implants and not replace them with new ones, you are looking for explantation or breast implant removal surgery. This procedure removes your breast implants (and the capsule) and then leaves the breasts in their natural state, with no added augmentation. Some patients choose to combine explantation with a breast lift to restore a more natural, youthful appearance.
