Gynecomastia surgery is the ideal treatment for enlarged male breasts, as it removes glandular tissue and reshapes the chest for a more masculine appearance. But the best surgical results come from properly preparing your body and living space for surgery and the requirements of recovery. This blog discusses what patients need to do in order to prepare for gynecomastia surgery.

Gynecomastia Surgery Tips

Choosing to undergo male breast reduction surgery, or gynecomastia surgery, is an exciting decision to improve your aesthetics and self-confidence. Many men feel insecure about their enlarged breasts, and in combination with a healthy lifestyle, gynecomastia surgery is often the only true cure.

Although gynecomastia surgery is cosmetic, and thus an elective procedure, it’s still a major surgical procedure that needs to be taken seriously and adequately prepared for to ensure your health and safety.

Before we detail how to prepare for gynecomastia surgery, we’ll briefly go over the surgical steps.

Gynecomastia Surgery Steps

Each procedure is different, depending on the needs of the patient. But generally, gynecomastia surgery is carried out as follows:

  • The patient is given general anesthesia for optimum comfort and safety.
  • The surgeon makes a small incision around the nipple, depending on the level of tissue that needs to be removed.
  • The surgeon then removes the glandular tissue by excision. Excess skin can be removed at this time, as well.
  • The surgeon can also contour the nipples and move them into a more natural position, if necessary.
  • The incisions are carefully closed to reduce the risk of scarring.

Tips for Preparing for Gynecomastia Surgery

Whether you’ve already decided to undergo surgery or you’re just doing your research, here are some tips for preparing for gynecomastia surgery.

  1. Choose the Right Gynecomastia Surgeon

It’s important to choose the right surgeon for your gynecomastia procedure. Male breast reduction surgery is an elective procedure, which means you won’t be able to use health insurance, and you’ll be responsible for choosing your own surgeon. You’ll want to choose someone who:

  • Is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery
  • Has plenty of experience performing gynecomastia surgery
  • Can show you before and after photos of previous patients

It’s important that you feel comfortable with your surgeon and trust them to do a good job. You should also feel confident they will help you through the recovery.

Tip: During your consultation, ask as many questions as you’d like about the procedure steps, recovery, and potential results. The more you know ahead of time, the better you can plan for the procedure and increase your chances of having a positive experience. Plus, this allows you to make your surgeon choice based on how questions are answered and the amount of information provided.

  1. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Gynecomastia is caused by hormonal imbalances, which in turn can be caused by a variety of factors such as alcohol consumption, recreational drug use, certain prescription medications, and anabolic steroids. During your consultation or a visit with your primary care provider, your doctor will likely recommend reducing any of these factors, if possible. For example, you may not be able to adjust prescription medications, but you can stop drinking alcohol or smoking marijuana to better balance your hormones.

In addition to addressing the causes of gynecomastia, you’ll have to get yourself healthy to prepare for the surgery itself. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with preoperative instructions, which you should follow as closely as possible. Make sure to eat healthy and exercise to maintain a steady weight. You will need to pause blood-thinning medications and supplements. Nicotine use is also strictly prohibited, as it can affect the healing and recovery process.

Gynecomastia preoperative instructions:

  • Get full medical history and required diagnostic testing.
  • Eat healthy, exercise, and maintain your weight.
  • Stop recreational drugs, alcohol consumption, anabolic steroids, and blood thinners.
  • See your primary care physician if you are required to adjust prescription medications.

3. Prepare for Recovery

Each patient is different, but gynecomastia surgery usually requires at least one week of downtime, which means restricted activities—no work or school. In addition, physical activity will be limited for a few weeks after that.

Immediately after your procedure, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home from surgery and stay with you for at least 48 hours as you recover from the anesthesia. You will be weak, tired, and a little disoriented. It’s crucial that you have someone with you in case of an emergency and to help you around the house.

As you regain strength, you’ll still be more easily fatigued and won’t be moving around as much. It’s important to prepare for this period of inactivity ahead of time so that it goes more smoothly and you do not risk compromising your results by rushing the healing process.

Before surgery:

  • Find someone to help you out for those first few days.
  • Prepare healthy meals or otherwise stock your pantry, as you’ll need healthy food but won’t have much energy to prepare it.
  • Take at least one week off from work and other commitments to rest.
