When to Have, What’s Involved, and How to Get the Most from Your Mommy Makeover

A mommy makeover is a type of surgical treatment plan that includes a variety of different procedures, helping women attain the contours of their pre-pregnancy body. Surgeons can customize the mommy makeover to best suit individual needs. Women can undergo more than one procedure at a time as part of their overall plan, helping them attain the youthful curves and elevation they desire one step at a time. With this popular, highly personalized procedure plan, women can combat the effects of aging and weight changes and make a huge impact on their sense of self-confidence.

When to Have a Mommy Makeover

Choosing the right time for your mommy makeover is essential. A mommy makeover is designed to be highly personalized to your wishes, however, it can only be performed a minimum of six months after a patient has given birth for safety reasons. The procedure plan can include any combination of breast surgery, tummy tuck, fat removal, fat transfer, and/or vaginal rejuvenation. For example, you can consider breast surgery if you have recently had biological children and are done with breastfeeding, or you are going through menopause. After breastfeeding, especially, the breasts can become deflated and sag due to fat atrophy and a decrease in estrogen can cause changes in body composition. The overly stretched skin of the breasts experiences a decrease in collagen production, making it impossible to regain the breast elevation and volume that they once had. A breast lift and/or enhancement with implants can restore your breasts’ youthful contours.

In the same way, the breasts experience dramatic fluctuations in size, the abdomen also undergoes similar changes through pregnancy and childbirth. If you have lax skin, folds, and stretch marks in this area, you may want to explore the benefits of a tummy tuck or extended tummy tuck. The procedure can also repair loosened abdominal muscles, a condition called diastasis recti. (1) The condition develops as a result of the internal pressure of carrying a baby.

Liposuction is another great option, allowing you to trim targeted areas with just one or two tiny incisions and suction pressure to remove fat deposits. Fat development can be a significant issue postpartum, since insulin sensitivity can decrease by 50 to 60% during pregnancy, slowing down metabolism. (2) Even after childbirth, this change can persist, leaving you unable to get rid of fat with just diet and exercise. The procedure is a great option if you have young, elastic skin and stubborn pockets of fat.

Liposuction can not only sculpt more flattering contours without unsightly scars, but surgeons can remove fat from one area and re-inject it into another- a procedure called fat grafting. If you have an area of excess fat and less shapely buttocks, the Brazilian butt lift (BBL) can be transformative. However, you will need to be within the normal or overweight weight range to qualify for this procedure.

Finally, vaginal rejuvenation is another optional aspect of the mommy makeover that can be vital to your sexual well-being and comfort. If you have sensations of vaginal looseness, dryness, or bladder incontinence, the EmpowerRF system can strengthen your pelvic floor and resurfacing the vaginal lining with non-invasive and minimally invasive modalities.

What’s Involved in Mommy Makeover Procedures?

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation specifically restores volume to the breasts with silicone, saline, or gummy bear implants (highly cohesive silicone). Your surgeon can insert these biocompatible implants using a periareolar incision (around the nipple-areola complex), an inframammary incision in the breast fold, or a transaxillary incision near the armpit. Breast augmentation with implants can give you greater customization since you can work with your surgeon to determine the best shape, size, material, texture, profile projection, and placement within the breast tissue. The result is highly predictable and can last for many years to come.

To facilitate a more natural look, your surgeon can utilize fat transfer techniques to further soften and plump your breast contours. The procedure requires general anesthesia or sedation, but with our 24-hour rapid recovery protocol, our surgeons can help you heal faster with less downtime.

Breast Lift

A breast lift involves removing excess breast skin that has descended due to deflation and the effects of gravity and aging. Depending on how much sagging, or ptosis, is present, your surgeon will recommend a specific approach. Surgeons can resolve milder cases of ptosis using just a small incision that encircles the areola, whereas moderate and severe cases may require an areolar incision alongside a vertical incision (“lollipop” incision). For the most substantial and supportive changes, your surgeon can create an anchor incision which includes a lollipop shape with an added incision that travels along the underside of each breast. (3) To achieve both elevation and volume, you can consult your surgeon about undergoing an augmentation mastopexy, another term for breast implant surgery with a lift. Should you want smaller but perkier breasts, a breast lift with reduction may be the best choice.

Liposuction

Surgeons can perform liposuction on any area of the body that develops subcutaneous fat. Depending on the extent of the surgery, your surgeon may administer sedation or general anesthesia. They will then typically only need to make one incision of a centimeter or less in the treatment area and administer tumescent fluid to prepare the fat and numb the tissues. Then, they will insert a long suction tool called a cannula to permanently and evenly remove bulging fat.

Tummy Tuck

For a tummy tuck, your surgeon will need to make a lower abdominal incision- just above the pubic area- to excise fat, remove stretched skin, and correct diastasis recti with permanent, biocompatible sutures. More comprehensive revision may require a thin incision around the navel to keep it in the most natural position during skin removal. You can enjoy a flat midsection with a hidden scar easily concealed with a bathing suit. The procedure may or may not include liposuction to enhance the results.

Brazilian Butt Lift

For a BBL, your surgeon will use liposuction in any area you would like to slim down, such as the abdomen, thighs, or flanks. They will prepare the collected fat cells into vials and expose them to centrifugation, separating blood cells and oils from the fat. (4) They will then use another cannula to readminister these deposits into the buttock region, careful to remain in the appropriate tissue plane. The surviving cells will continue to flourish in their new location.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation with EmpowerRF involves three modalities to promote greater strength in the pelvic floor, resurface the vaginal lining, and resolve issues of sexual dissatisfaction, dryness, and incontinence. The system can apply radiofrequency (RF), a type of electromagnetic energy that gently heats the vaginal tissues from deep within. For muscular weakness, electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) can trigger contractions and rehabilitate the tissues. The microneedling aspect of the system utilizes the finest needles to trigger a subdermal influx of new collagen and elastin fibers, restoring more youthful elasticity and rigidity to the canal. Your clinician can apply topical anesthesia to the vagina to make the procedure much more tolerable.
