Types of Tummy Tuck Surgery

Many patients are dissatisfied with the appearance of their waistlines. For the majority of patients, the answer is “yes.” Many patients are unhappy with the amount of excess fat and skin that seems to gather around the tummy area. Even patients who are extremely conscientious of their diet and exercise routine find that this can be a problem area of the body. Many patients who are interested in slimming and toning the waistline may have even considered tummy tuck surgery. But likely, these patients have wondered if tummy tuck surgery is the right choice for them. Patients may wonder if tummy tuck surgery is too extreme for small areas of concern. Still other patients may wonder if tummy tuck surgery can offer results dramatic enough to give them the look they desire. The good news about tummy tuck surgery is that it is actually customizable. At Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg’s Long Island plastic surgery practice, there are different types of tummy tuck surgery that can be performed to meet the varying needs of his patients. So whether patients are looking for minimal alterations or drastic results, tummy tuck surgery may be right for them.

The Mini Tummy Tuck

For those patients in Long Island who are generally fit and slim, mini tummy tuck surgery can be performed to eliminate that small pouch of stubborn skin and fat that may be present. This is the most conservative type of tummy tuck surgery and only requires a small incision along the abdomen. This incision does not allow for the removal and repositioning of the belly button. Through this incision, Dr. Greenberg will remove a minor amount of excess skin and fat, tighten the abdominal muscles, and pull the skin taut before closing the incision. While recovery time for a mini tummy tuck varies by patient, it is reasonable to expect a shorter recovery time than would be required following a standard or extended tummy tuck.

The Standard Tummy Tuck

The standard tummy tuck is best suited for those patients who are in generally good health but have a sizable amount of loose skin and fat tissue around the waistline. For these patients in Long Island, tummy tuck surgery allows Dr. Greenberg to remove a significant amount of fat and skin and tighten the abdominal muscles. These alterations are generally made through an incision that extends from one hip bone to the other. An incision will also encircle the belly button so that the navel can be placed into a more natural looking position when the incision is closed. As with the mini tummy tuck, recovery time will vary but patients should anticipate a four to six-week recovery period.

The Extended Tummy Tuck

For patients who have excess skin and fat around the hips and lower back as well as the midsection, the extended tummy tuck is most likely the best option. During extended tummy tuck surgery, Dr. Greenberg will make an incision that extends across the waist, around the hip bones, and down to the lower back. Through this incision Dr. Greenberg can make alterations to the muscles in the abdomen and hips before removing excess skin and closing the incision. Patients undergoing extended tummy tuck surgery can expect a slightly longer recovery than the standard tummy tuck.
