What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?
Breast reductions, technically known as reduction mammaplasties, are designed for women with large symptomatic pendulous breasts. The procedure for breast reductions removes fat, glandular tissue, and skin from the breasts, making them smaller, lighter, and firmer. It can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin surrounding the nipple. The goal of breast reductions is to give women smaller, better-shaped breasts in proportion with the rest of their bodies. (this sounded a little odd now that it is plural)
Women with very large, pendulous breasts may experience a variety of medical problems caused by the excessive weight from back and neck pain and skin irritation to skeletal deformities and breathing problems. Bra straps may leave indentations in their shoulders, and unusually large breasts can make a woman - or a teenage girl - feel extremely self-conscious.
Best Candidates for Breast Reductions
Breast reductions are best for women who have...
- Breast size out of proportion to their body
- Pain due to breast size, which usually involves the neck, back and shoulders
- Shoulder grooving from their bra
- Skin irritation beneath the breasts
- Restrictions in activity
- Breast size which varies from side to side
Your Breast Reduction Consultation
During your breast reduction consultation, Dr. Greenberg will review your specific anatomy and symptoms. He will explain in detail the options for breast reductions and the possible incisions, which will be used. It is important that your weight is stabilized and a weight loss program has been attempted. In most cases breast reductions will be performed after the breasts are fully developed.
Dr. Greenberg performs breast reductions in one of his affiliated hospitals. Typically the incisions are around the nipple, from the nipple to the chest wall, and side to side in the infra-mammary crease. The extent of the incisions is somewhat dependent on the size of the breast reduction that needs to be performed. Dr. Greenberg removes glandular tissue, fat, and skin. The nipple will be placed back in its normal position, and the breast will be lifted. Liposuction is sometimes used during breast reductions to remove the excessive fatty tissue near the axilla (armpit) area. The ability to breast-feed is variable, and unpredictable.
If performed in the hospital, patients typically are sent home after one day. Patients are placed in a special support sports bra, which is worn for approximately 3-4 weeks and can resume heavy physical activity in 4 - 6 weeks after breast reductions. Complete healing can take up to one year.
