Types of Breast Implants

Many different types of breast implants are currently available in Manhattan from two manufacturers (Mentor and McGhan):

Saline: Saline breast implants are inflated with a saline (salt-water) solution through a valve. Saline is much like the fluid that makes up most of the human body.
Silicone: Siliconebreast implants are now FDA approved in the United States! In fact, a million women all over the world have them.

Dr. Greenberg thoroughly evaluates each patient to determine the size, shape and type of breast implant which would best suit each patient. In general, rounded and "anatomical" (breast shaped, teardrop) implants are used. Dr. Greenberg has recently been featured as a breast augmentation expert in Cosmopolitan Magazine discussing the various types of breast implants. Anatomical breast implants have many disadvantages when compared to round breast implants. Often when placed, round breast implants look more natural than the anatomical breast implants. Anatomical breast implants can also shift or turn creating an abnormal appearance to the breast.

Also available are smooth or textured breast implants. The textured breast implants tend to ripple more than the smooth, and in most cases, the textured implants offer no advantages.

One of the more recent advances in breast implants is the use of "expandable" breast implants that can be inflated to the final volume weeks after surgery. This gives Dr. Greenberg the ability to adjust the final size at a later date.

Breast Implants May Be Placed:

Beneath the breast tissue (sub-mammary) - The sub-mammary placement of breast implants is useful for those women who have more droop (ptosis) to the breast. This approach can give a more lifted, youthful appearance to the droopy breast without performing a breast lift. In the severely droopy breast, a breast lift can be performed with an augmentation or by itself.
Beneath the breast and the pectoral muscles of the chest (sub-pectoral) - In most cases, Dr. Greenberg will place breast implants in the sub-pectoral position. In the patient who has little or no droop to the breast, the best and most natural result is often obtained using the sub-pectoral placement. Generally, thin and smaller breasted women should favor placement under the muscle.

The exact placement of breast implants depends on the type, size, and how droopy the breast is pre-operatively. Dr. Greenberg often uses sizers at the time of surgery so that he can exactly pinpoint the specific size breast implant for each patient. Dr. Greenberg uses his expertise when deciding the positioning and exact size of the breast implants. The actual breast implant procedure will only take about 1 hour.
