Men and Plastic Surgery

By Stephen T. Greenberg, MD, FACS

When most people think of Cosmetic Surgery they think of women, primarily young women. The fact is that an increasing number of male Baby Boomers who fall in the age category of 40 to 58 are now turning to plastic surgery to try to look younger. It seems that America's youth-oriented culture is the driving force behind this trend, coupled with men's increasing comfort factor in admitting they do care about their looks and the perception of others. Although the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recently reported that women still account for the majority of cosmetic surgery procedures, the fact is that 13 percent of all procedures are done for men. This trend is significant as the percent of male procedures continues to grow each year.

Today men are just as concerned about achieving a youthful appearance as are most women. I continue to note a significant increase in the number of male patients who visit my office each year, to the point that men comprise about 20 percent of my patients. The culture we live in today places a great emphasis on looking and feeling young, as well as on living a healthy lifestyle. The stigma associated with having plastic surgery has largely disappeared which has resulted in a continued growth in the number of men seeking plastic surgery and making an investment in their appearance.

To this point, the total number of cosmetic surgery procedures has increased almost 18 percent since last year, reaching an impressive 7.2 million. The current state of our economy is another compelling reason for men to seek plastic surgery. The competitive and challenging job market is a common reason for men to seek a more youthful appearance, as more often than ever they are competing with younger men for the same employment. Additionally, men who are divorced, widowed or seeking a relationship believe that a more youthful appearance can only work to their benefit in the social arena.

Liposuction tops the list of most popular procedures for men, followed by Male chest (breast) reduction, Nose re-shaping, eyelid lifts, and hair transplantation. The most common areas for liposuction in men are the abdomen and love handles. The down-time is minimal (often men can take only 1-2 days off from work), and the results are usually fantastic. The newest liposuction technique (smart-lipo MPX) works great in men as well.

Male breast reduction (gynecomastia) is a very common procedure which can get rid of both the excessive breast tissue and fat from the chest wall. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and the patients are back to work in 48 hours. Some men choose to combine abdominal liposuction and chest reduction at the same time. Another common procedure is eyelid lifts. This 45 minute ambulatory procedure removes excess skin and fat from both the upper and lower eyelids and provides a fresh, rejuvenated appearance to the face. Lastly, hair transplantation has made huge strides in the last several years, which in virtually undetectable, and can provide naturally growing hair to the thinning scalp.

The male cosmetic surgery market continues to grow rapidly. Natural results with quick recovery can be obtained to help the guys look great!
